Lowther

The parish of Lowther, located in the Eden District of Cumbria, lies within the picturesque landscapes of the Lake District’s eastern fringes. Centered around the River Lowther, the parish is best known for Lowther Castle and Gardens, once the grand seat of the Lowther family and now a major heritage attraction. The area encompasses a collection of small hamlets and rural settlements, set amid rolling farmland, ancient woodland, and historic parkland. Rich in history, from medieval roots to its association with the influential Earls of Lonsdale, Lowther today combines a strong sense of heritage with a tranquil countryside character, making it both a peaceful community and a place of cultural interest.

Lowther Castle & Gardens

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north.
